Form I-90: Update the name on your permanent resident card
Change your name on your green card
To change the name on your green card after marriage, divorce, or a court order, you file Form I-90 with proof of the legal change. The same form fixes a wrong name. We pick the reason on the form and list the documents to send.

NEXT STEP
A new green card does not update your Social Security record. Update your name with the Social Security Administration separately, since it has its own application and documents. Immiva does not prepare that form.
Why the name is changing
What changed your name?
The reason you pick changes the documents you send and the fee.
- 01
Marriage
Taking a spouse's last name or hyphenating it is a legal name change. File Form I-90 with a copy of the marriage certificate.
MARRIAGEStart your I-90 - 02
Divorce
Going back to a former name is also a legal name change. Send the divorce decree if it restores your name, or a court order.
DIVORCEStart your I-90 - 03
Court order
A court-approved name change for any other reason. Send a copy of the court order that shows the new name.
COURT ORDERStart your I-90 - 04
Wrong name or date of birth on the card
If USCIS made the mistake, the reason on Form I-90 is a DHS error, and the fee is $0. Send the original card that shows the error. If the error came from your own application, it is not a DHS error.

Becoming a citizen soon
On Form N-400 you can ask a court to change your name at a judicial oath ceremony. USCIS administrative ceremonies cannot change a name. If you are close to qualifying, citizenship may make a new green card unnecessary.

What you get
A green card renewal package built for your reason
Your answers decide the reason on the form, the fee, the mailing address, and the document list.
The right reason on Part 2
Part 2 lists a reason for each situation, and a wrong one can get the form denied. You answer a few questions and we check the box that fits.
The right USCIS fee
The fee is $465 on paper or $415 online for most reasons. It is $0 when USCIS got your card back undeliverable, DHS made the mistake, or a child turned 14 with a card good past the 16th birthday. We work out which applies.
File online or by mail
File Form I-90 online through your USCIS account, or mail it to a USCIS lockbox. Your filing instructions cover both and name the lockbox for your case.
A document list for your reason
A copy of your card or photo ID, a name change document, or the original card with a DHS error, depending on why you file.

Green card name change questions, answered
Marriage, divorce, errors, and what to update next.
File Form I-90, the form for replacing a permanent resident card, and choose the reason for a legal name change. Send a copy of the document that shows the change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.
You file Form I-90 with a copy of your marriage certificate. If you keep your own name, there is nothing to change.
USCIS lists a legal name change as a reason to replace your card. Your name on the card should match your other documents, so most people file after a legal change.
If USCIS made the mistake, file Form I-90 for a card with incorrect data due to a DHS error and send the card that shows it. The fee is $0. If the wrong name came from your own application, the error is not DHS.
Yes. USCIS lists a legal name change as a reason for conditional residents to replace the card too. If the card is expiring within 90 days, file Form I-751 to remove the conditions instead. See the I-751 page
Yes. On Form N-400 you can ask a court to change your name at a judicial oath ceremony. USCIS administrative ceremonies cannot change a name. A citizen has no use for a green card, so this can save a step if you are about to apply. See the citizenship page
Yes. A new green card does not change your Social Security record. Apply to the Social Security Administration with your proof of name change, and update your state ID too.
Immiva's preparation fee is $99, paid after you see your completed forms. The USCIS fee is separate.
