What people ask before they start.
Inside the United States you do not renew the visa itself. You get an H-4 extension: you file Form I-539 and choose extension of stay. File before your current H-4 expires, and generally no more than 6 months before. Your H-4 cannot run past the validity of your spouse’s H-1B. Each child who extends files a Form I-539A with it.
Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status. It extends your stay in the United States. It does not give you a new visa stamp for travel, which is a separate consular process.
You file a new Form I-765 as a renewal under category C26, with a copy of your current card. The renewal needs your spouse’s approved I-140, or an H-1B extension past year six under AC21. USCIS decides the I-765 after the I-539, which is one reason to file them together.

No. Only the spouse of an H-1B worker can get the H-4 work permit. Children extend their H-4 status on Form I-539A and cannot apply for an EAD in this category.
