Methods and definitions
USCIS produced the raw observations. Immiva cleaned and analyzed them, keeping completions separate from approvals plus denials. Each measure describes a different part of the workload.
Receipts count incoming filings. Completions count cases USCIS reports as completed. Completions per 100 receipts compares those quarterly totals. It does not show how many of that quarter’s new filings were completed.
Pending is a count of cases at a point in time, and USCIS can revise it. Receipts minus completions does not give an exact change in pending cases. Pending, net backlog and frontlog have different definitions and scopes.
Quarterly processing time is the median for cases completed in that quarter. It does not measure the age of pending cases or predict when an individual case will finish.
Denial share is denials divided by approvals plus denials. These decisions can concern earlier filings. The share does not describe everyone who filed or estimate an individual’s odds. It can rise while denials fall if approvals fall faster.
