TWO DATES, BOTH MATTER
File up to 90 days before your OPT EAD expires, and within 60 days of the DSO recommendation. USCIS states both limits on its STEM OPT page. If your OPT period ends while a timely filed extension is pending, USCIS automatically extends your work authorization for up to 180 days, until it decides the application.

What you get
One Form I-765 built for your F-1 category
Your category controls the questions, checks, and document list.
- PRE-FILING AUDIT
10 checks before you file
We check category and status matching, prior training history, the five category rule sets when applicable, the right category for this application, required fields, and field content before you pay.
Your category saved once
Choose the category at the start. It carries into Form I-765 so you do not answer the same question again.
Dates checked against the right rule
Program end, EAD expiry, and DSO recommendation dates are handled according to the selected category.
A document list for your path
The checklist reflects the school, degree, employer, training-plan, or hardship evidence your category needs.
How it works
Apply for your STEM OPT extension in four steps
Your answers save as you go.
Check your dates and degree
Tell us when your current OPT EAD expires, which degree you are using, and whether your employer and Form I-983 are ready. No account is needed.
Get the DSO recommendation
Your school official enters the STEM OPT recommendation in SEVIS and endorses your Form I-20. You and your employer complete Form I-983 with them.
Complete Form I-765
Work through the form in plain English. Your category and employer details are filled from your answers, then you read the report.

Common questions
STEM OPT extension questions, answered
Timing, requirements, unemployment days and Form I-983.
It is a 24-month extension of post-completion OPT for F-1 students with a qualifying degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. You apply on Form I-765 while you are in a valid period of post-completion OPT.
File up to 90 days before your current OPT EAD expires, and within 60 days of the date your DSO enters the recommendation in SEVIS. Both limits apply. Start with the recommendation, because the 60-day clock runs from it.
You must be in a valid period of post-completion OPT, hold a qualifying degree from an accredited, SEVP-certified U.S. school, and work for an employer enrolled in E-Verify that meets the training requirements. You file Form I-765 with the fee, your employer’s E-Verify details, your DSO-endorsed Form I-20 and a copy of your degree.
The list is published by DHS and is based on the CIP code of your program. The CIP code appears on your Form I-20. Your DSO confirms it when they enter the recommendation.
USCIS publishes current times and they change, so we do not quote a number. If your OPT period ends while a timely filed extension is pending, USCIS automatically extends your work authorization for up to 180 days, until it decides the application.
You may be unemployed for up to 90 days during your initial OPT, and for an additional 60 days during the 24-month extension, so 150 days in total.
You and your employer complete the Form I-983 training plan, and your DSO keeps it. It does not go to USCIS with your application, and Immiva does not prepare it. We do check that your employer and training plan are ready before you file.
Only if you earn another qualifying STEM degree at a higher educational level, for example a master’s degree after a bachelor’s degree that supported your first extension. USCIS allows one additional 24-month extension on the higher degree.
Immiva's preparation fee is $99, paid after you see the report. The USCIS filing fee is separate and varies by filing method.
